A Devil's Cigar fungus (Chorioactis geasteris.) It hisses with clouds of smoke-like spores when it opens into recurved rays three or four inches wide. I sometimes find them in December and January growing up from the decaying roots of cedar elm trees. It isn't found in situ very long as millipedes and other creatures apparently find it to be a delicacy. 12-12-06.
